I really don't understand why you'd have a plant that doesn't give you fruits..or in this case, potatoes! Last year I planted a spud from a bag of potatoes I had. And I was so surprised after 3 months of it growing, to find potatoes in the pot! So have a look at my video to see how easy it is! ;)

This is a video I did late this Fall on freezing yur carrots. It's a very good way to store them for the winter. but you do need freezer space. So right now my freezer is half full with grated carrots ;)

Just a simple bread recipe, wich takes about a minute to make, 12 hours to rise. Only need 4 cups of flours, a tea spoon of yeast, a pinch of salt and 2 cups of water!!! Check my VIDEO of it if you're intrested ;)

I took a mental health day from work today ;). And I just wasted my day..well not really, planted my new winter indoor garden sprouts, made bread, got local meat....a busy fun day. So yeah any of you in a planting spree!? I'm not really, not yet. But I wanted to give another try to growing cuccumbers indoors. Last Fall I had stoped because of a gnat infestation. When I came home from work I got a note saying I had a package at the post office. My seeds had finally arrived!!! I filmed myself unpacking them (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eL90J1CKYKQ). It's the first time I order seeds (and so much!) Now I'll be ready to plant my tomatoes and peppers at the end of February!!!

I wasn't gonna..but I did. I've placed a store bought sweet potato in some water to make it root and sprout. Now I still have at least 3 months before Spring is totally here, so I hope it will have enough time to sprout. I still have no idea where I will plant the sprouts...but I suppose I'll have time to dig a hole for it. Besides than....nothing much happening here. I am going to shovel snow in a little while because after a month there's been a snowfall! I'm still making videos of my plans for 2010 on Youtube. Mostly because I need to wait 'till the end of Februrary before planting anything. ;)

2010 resolutions

I just want to take a few minutes to wish you an awsome year 2010!

And maybe to encourage you all to add some green resolutions this year.

Here are a few of mine and of course if you have some more, please share!

First the 3 Rs, recycle, reuse and reduce! Second buy local as much as you can. This will of course take less energy to transport products and encourage you local economy. Because even if all the "major" countries are thinking of China to salvage their economies.....we all know the best way it to buy "home made" products. I know I will and even if I live in a "minor" province of Canada...this is very doable. One last resolution idea...plant something! ;)

2010 planning!!!

It's been a few days now that the weather has been really wintery. Snow, wind and cold! So I've decided to start planning my many gardens for 2010. The more I do I realize that I'll have lots more cultivated space than in my first year. I'd say 3 to 4 times more. I hope it won't be too much. I guess I'll see!!! But just the planning part is new to me. I used to plant everything where it looked good. But with a little research I found some plants go well together. Even help each other out with bugs and nutrients. I used the resourses on the veseys website. I'm currently working on a plan for my 2010 garden. Soon I'll order my seeds. I can't hardly wait 'till Spring!!!!

More first snow!

Finally winter has arrived. Took a long time this year. And even now it's raining so....But at least the ground is starting to freeze. Wich will be great for killing fungus and some bugs. So the outside part of my gardening is over. My indoor gardening is going ok......I could've cared for it better...but since I had so many small flies....I had to let the dirt get dry so the maggots die. But a plant with minimal water doesn't grow very well. Next year I'll start with new dirt clean of flies =) So have a great week!

Beware of rocks!!!

I don't have a picture for this entry because by the time I was finished there wasn't enough light. Late this afternoon I dug up a trench at the end of my yard for future asparagus plants. It's approximately 2 feet wide and 16 long. Since the seedling need to grow for 2-3 years before you can harvest.....you want a place out of the way so they'll grow quietly. Anyway......rocks! The spot where I dug was, like I said at the end of my yard. When my parents used to grow vegetable they threw all the rocks they found there. So today when I jumped on my shovel it didn't even go in! And I had a really bad time taking all those big rocks out. So what I want to say is throw your rock away for real. Not in a place you don't use. Because one day you may want to use it and will be really frustrated at yourself....or maybe your kids will be in the future =)

Oh and we are having really weird pre-winter weather. Normally there's snow and cold. But so far no snow, beautiful over freezing weather and just awsome Fall!

Composting more leaves!

Tonite after work....just before the sun went out.....I composted more leaves. This time I just added a huge load on my compost and covered it with garden dirt. When I take my greenhouse in the garage I'll use the dirt in the pots to cover some more leaves =) It's weird but I love composting!

Yesterdays I finally got around raking the rest of the leaves. There was a lot and I placed them in my larger garden. They will add precious organic materials to the dirt for next year =) I also cleaned the garage so I can put my car in this winter. Now I only need to find some help and put mt small greenhouse in it =)

First snow!!!

Last night I had my first snow. Wasn't a lot of it but it did cover up everything with a thin layer of white. This afternoon when I came back from work I went have a look at my lettuce and spinach plants. The smaller leaves I left were still in perfect condition. Even after spending a whole night covered by snow. This is pretty amazing for a comestible plant! I'm gonna grow much more next Spring and Fall.

Last gardening days

Today I took my seasonal things back in the shed and garage. Winter is coming, I can feel it. I also harvested the last of my spinach and lettuces. I left the stems out just in case the weather get warmer. And finally I raked 4 big bags of leaves. Once I clean the ground of my main garden of rocks, I'll add those to the dirt. It will add desperatly needed organic material.

Climat differences

Last night there was a snow fall. All around here but not actually where I live. The same thing goes for frost. The main thing is that I live in a coastal town. And the humidity and warmth (I suppose) from so much water affects the climat. Plus the unstable maritime weather all year round can be a challenge for gardening of all kind. Especially for trees. Some winters can destroy much of the buds...or just be too humid....weird. The last two years, we had a lot of snow at once before the ground froze. In Spring the snow melted diffrently and broke everything that was under it. I don't know what kind of winter this will be but I hope it's cold with less snow. Anyway I'm babling on....have a good one!

Raking the leaves

My porch vines lost most of their leaves. So I rake them. But instead of putting them to the curve, I've mixed them in my squarefoot gardens. It'll mulch and compost on it's own making my dirt rich with organic materials. I wanted to get the leaves form strangers on trash day. But I worried about introducing new bugs around my house. So I'm only going to use the leaves from my lot and my neighbors. So besides work and going to the vet, this is what I did today ;) Have a great week everyone!

I don't really have time for a long entry but I did make a small video on Youtube. I harvested my carrots today, well what was left if them, I had two yellow ones ??? The only thing left outside are my lettuces, spinach and a few beets that are only leaves. I'll harvest those as soon as I'm done eating what I have in the house. The leaves are actually quite good when steamed or boiled for a few minutes. They taste like cooked spinach. And that's it! I'm still not spending as much as I can but I'm not too strict. I'm not ready to become a full hippie just yet. I'll ease into it as I get closer to my ten year deadline =)

This morning it's litterally cold outside. And I think that tonite it will freeze. So I suppose tonite I'll be harvesting most of my main garden. Tomatoes, zucchinis, the bigger carrots and peppers. I will leave my radishes, lettuce and spinach out. They can take a frost plus they're in raised beds so I think they'll be ok. But before I can do that I need to go to work.

Still not spending too much money....but I've been working more and sleeping less. My wisdom teeth decided to finish growing after 6 years. So my head feels like it's in a crusher all the time =S

But at least the garden is not requirering any care. It's been raining on and off since Fall started. My September radishes are growing as well as my August beets. Well everything is still growing actually =) But the leaves are falling and soon snow will arrive.

Sorry about the lack of posts.

But nothing has been happening in the past days.

I'm still waiting for my garden to be emptied so I can work on the soil.

Oh I did mix some dead leaves in some part of the garden.

Besides that....everything is still growing, at a slower rate since it's less sunny and colder.

Oh and I've spent 26 dollars so far this week. I bought a computer game. Not working nights is a change and I found it a little boring. But it was on sale =)

Sumary of 2009 (pumpkins and zucchinis)

I've just posted a new video about what I learned on my first year of actual gardening in the earth. So I might as well share this knowledge here too.

First the pumpkins!
I started them inside the house I think it was in the middle of April. I didn't want the worms to eat my new sprouts so by the time they went in the garden they had a few leaves. The vines grew pretty fast. But by mid June I was starting to despair about the pumpkins actually growing. They had quite a few flowers, both male and female but they kept falling off. I though it was a watering problem...but now that I think of it I just think it was too early and the plant wasn't ready to grow pumpkins. By mid June I self polinated the flowers(it was always rainy and the bees were scarce) and they finally stayed on the vine. I had one pumpkin per plant and they grew really fast and took a LOT of space. Now they are all turning orange and will soon be harvested and brought in the house. They can keep for a long while just at room temperature, if you don't overheat your house. So I will have enough pumpkins for a while.

Now zucchinis!

Well again like the pumpkins I grew them in the house, because of the worms that like sprouts. Like pumpkins they grew fast and easily. They do need a constant moist soil. And you have to watch not to get the leaves wet for long time as they grow mildew pretty easily. With a few plants (6) I had more than I could eat, litterally! They do take some space, the vine doesn't travel as far as a pumpkin but the leaves are pretty big. One plant grew at least 4 feet long and was over 2 feet wide. They started dying down as the nights got colder. But since I build my greenhouses around them they started growing again. I will probably have a few zucchinis before winter =)

So this is mostly what I learned about those two squashes. Next year I'm gonna try some more squashes, buttercup and butternut. So if you have advice on those please do tell. I would really appreciate it =)

Day 5

Well today I had the day off. So I started early working around the house. I made myself some pumpkin pie ''mix''. I also made a few videos for my Youtube channel. But.....I went to McDonalds with my sister and she bought me a lunch...but I bought myself a coffee =( but it's sooo good! We were there right in the dinner rush and Oh my God! The craziness of it all. Everyone rushing to eat as fast as they can before returning to work....cars evreywhere almost pushing each other. Anyway I was glad to be out of there! I also spent some money on a big bag of chicken compost and a big block of peat moss. I will be fully stocked all winter with so much dirt. And with the coffee it just cost me 25 dollars total. So I wouldn't call today a miss towards my goal.

No money day 4

Well today is day four and it's still going ok. Tonite is my Friday night since I'm not working tomorow. And after work I was a little tempted by coffee and fried foods. In the afternoon where I worked the lady had the t.v. on. They kept showing ads for "Tim Hortons" and restaurants. So when I got home I made myself a strong coffee and gathered some more lettuce for a salad. Wich was soooo good! And for the fried food...I made myself fried zucchini slices. They were pretty good especially with my homemade garlic diping sauce. But this post isn't about food. It's more about stepping back. This whole experience is starting to feel like a blessing. Makes me appreciate the smaller things in life. And most importantly working to make what you want. Not to buy but to actually make. For a few months now I was feeling like something wasn't right moneywise. And instead of waiting for me to get accustomed to this, I just stopped everything to do with money. It's harsh but it works. The more time passes the more I see that I had lost this self sufficient feeling I love.

Day two...

My second day of not spending money. Going pretty good I must say. But before I start I just want to show the salad I made for supper. All homegrown here. It was the best salad I ever ate =)

Now back to my second day! Well I worked all day and once I finished I was pretty tired. But I didn't feel like a coffee so that didn't bother me. I got home and went into my garden and cut myself lettuce and spinach leaves...oh and cherry tomatoes. My sister had called to see if I wanted to have dinner at her place. But since it would've cost me gas and fries (she wanted me to go get some) I decided against it. So I'd say that so far this weekend I already saved like 10 bucks. Wich is pretty cool. Later on I think I am going to have trouble with one thing . I'm running low on store bought compost and moss for my indoor gardening. We'll see...is it a waste of money if it's for my indoor gardening experiments!?

Getting back on track

For a few weeks now I've been slacking off as far as saving money goes. Or rather trying not to waste so much of it. Today after work I was relived to find that I didn't have change in my pokets to buy a coffee. That got me thinking about the fact that I had started wasting my money again. Like buying coffees everyday or so. Eating from restaurants and such. Now for most people this would sound normal. And it kinda is. But not if you want to reduce the amount of money you need. So for the next three weeks I am going to try to use as little money as I can. Now I'm not going to take into account my many monthly bills. Just the everyday things.

So far my first day seems to be a succes it's 8;25 p.m. and no money was used today. But we'll see how the three weeks goes because I will need to be a little crative with my food. Because normally I would've gone shopping for groceries next weekend. But we'll see how it goes! I'm actually excited about this. And of course I'll comment on this blog and on Youtube about how it is going =)

I may be taking a little homestead break but today I found someone hard at work for me...lady bugs! My prune trees were full of aphids not to long ago. But they ate everyone! The only thing left was a dirty dozen ladybugs and a few ants searchin for their lost friends. Now I hope they will stay here permenantly. And I can't wait to attract the predator of my radish and spinach eating green worms. And now let me ask you a question. Who is you favorite natural helper in your garden? Me it's the lady bug of course!

Nothing to report

Today, I took a day off. I woke up, ate a little (left over ribs) then I went to a friend's house. Ate dinner there. Then went to my sis' and ate supper there. There might be a frost tonite....and it blows because usually we have a wonderfull September. And then there..Indian summer (I don't meant no disrespectfull to aboriginal people but that's how we call it..and btw my great great grand mother was aboriginal). But this year it's a cold September! My new cucumbers in the greenhouse still grow....but not as fast as the ones in the house. One of my old cucumber plant I left growing, started growing a new flower on a new vine.....Which is really nice but we'll see what happens with that because it doesn't have a flower of the other sex =S anyway I took a day off from my normal life =)

Taming the wind

So one thing I never did before a few months ago was drying my clothes in the wind rather than the dryer. I never liked the smell it gives to clothes. Plus the dryer takes all the lint away. But since I am trying to use less and save what is left of the planet, I'm going to tame the wind (unti I built a windmill, then I'll really tame the wind ;). But if like me you're worried about static, use fabric softner. And lint? I put the clothes in the dryer for a tumble of a few minutes without heat and voila! The olny problem for me is the little rack I use (see photo) Now I need to get myself a drying line up. But I don't know where to hang it. I'll add that to my 2010 list =)

A big part of being self sustainable in not only growing your own food but also cooking it. We live in a world where we have the bad habit of buying processed food. We buy it because it's easier and takes less time that we don't have because we are working more to pay for these processed foods. But it's been a month now that I've decided to reduce this trend in my household.-Just for the reccord today, when I was coming home from work I bought myself fries. I didn't feel like cooking dinner...even if I had some of tha wonderful stew left. But as they say, bad habits die hard-. Anyway...as of late I've enjoyed cooking very much. I've started making my own pizzas, bread and jams (some recipes on my youtube page ;) more for fun...http://www.youtube.com/user/jihadacadien ). I've noticed that most food doesn't take that much time to make. It's just planning when and how to do it. Like bread, beside the rising time, it doesn't take that much time to actually make bread. And it comes cheaper than at the store, it can be way more healthier and the taste....well doesn't even compare! When you combine making your own food with using your homegrown produce.....you start believing in the exsitence of God! =)

Proud parent feeling

This morning as I went to the garden to take a few pictures of my greenhouses for the previous entry...I couldn't stop taking pictures of my vegetables. And looking at those pictures I felt like I wanted to show the rest of the world what I was able to grow on my own. Almost like a parent getting his flip book out of his wallet to show his kids =) So enjoy the fruits of my labor!

Customize your greenhouse !

So tonight I did was I said I would and built my mini greenhouses around my zucchinis. I did have some trouble building the frames since I was alone but I managed. Now I have no idea if it will do anything. But I did leave two zucchinis outside to see differences. I've read that some gardeners extend their gardening season by having raised beds and putting a small hoop greenhouse when the temperature starts dropping. I will of course try this eventually. but I need more time to get more dirt and planks for the raising of the earth. But hey I'm in my first year! So plenty of time left. Stretching Summer

Where I live, Summer starts ending in September....sadly. But tomorrow I am going to try to stretch my zucchini's life cycle. I'll build some simple mini greehouses over the plants in the garden. Now I have no idea how I'll do this. In fact I still haven't checked if I have plastic left in the garage. But it will be done tomorrow and I will post about it (probably even a video on Youtube). But in the meantime if you want to stretch Summer for your plants. I heard that to avoid freeze, you can simply put plastic over your plants at night.But you need to take it out in the morning or else they will steam during the day. Still some plants that need lots of heat might stop producing as the tempreture drops. I guess we will see if it's the case for my zucchinis =)

Surprising surprises of surprise

This afternoon I went for a stroll in my garden. Got a few cherry tomatoes that were ripe....looked at the zucchinis....and looked for radishes ready to come out. Instead of my small radishes I found a huge one! After coming out of my amazement I washed it and ate it. I got 5 bites out of it! Which brings me to my point. I love these little surprises in the garden. Like the one I had....or like finding a mature cucumber unoticed before, a "mutant" carrot with 5 legs.

It's as if the earth is giving you a special gift for helping her out (so corny! I know!)

Gardening as a therapy

I won't lie to you...as most people my job is hard on my mental health. I deal with sick people and from time to time they die. Some days are easier than others, of course, but also..some are harder. But my way of keeping sane is gardening, or when I can't, thinking about it. Mabe it's the greenery, the life growing all around or just the manual labour, but my troubles just fly away. And when I have a perculiar trying day...I just think that I should be working less and less the more food I produce =) So yeah why work more and more and stress until a breakdown!?

You can if you want but I found my way out. Now I just have to work at it =) And when you love what you do it's not really working.

Harvesting

I've been having trouble continuing my blog these past few days....for reasons unknown. But what the heck I'll just write what comes to mind about this crazy adventure! For a while now I've been havesting....on a small scale.But as Fall approaches I'm starting to harvest my usual crop (courgettes, onions, beans) and new ones. Like tomatoes, carrots, radishes, spinach, lettuces....and soon I'll have a pumpkin! I only wish I had planted more tomatoes so I could've canned some for the winter. Well I have something to get exited for next year I guess. The 10 year plan...

Now here comes my devious plan!
Basically, I'm giving myself 10 years (more or less) to become self sufficient. Ten years to be able to grow and raise my own food. I've told my family and a few friends and most of them think of me as crazy for trying this. But it must be doable!
Over the years I intend on transforming my backyard into cultivated 4x4 gardens (squarefoot gardening). I've gesstimated how much food I could grow with just the 10 spaces I have plowed for next year and it should be a large amount. This year was just a tryout. But next year will be more serious. I'll start a few weeks earlier planting seeds indoor and use all the great advice I got from my research online. My hope for this year was to see how good I'd do at gardening a real garden. And I was sucessful...some crop were harvested earlier than most people's. Next year I intend to have enough produce to last me for a part of the winter. Either by storing them in a cold room, freezing or canning. And every year I'll increase the amount of land cultivated. Probably try to work less at my day job and sell some of my excess but still getting my biggest monthly revenues from my 2 basement appartements that I rent. Once the house loan is paid I should be able to have enough money with my rents, and produce sales. Of course combined with all that will be a reducing of the money I spent in unecessaries (cell phones, takeouts, store bought food and such) recycling, and reusing materials. Now you tell me does this sound doable or am I just crazy!!! =)

How it all began.....in 2008

I suppose my first post should be about how this crazy adventure all began.
Well first of all, I've always been weird and stubborn enough not to follow the group. And after a first attempt at growing food on my backyard porch.....something in me strated to.....bloom. I was just a few plants that I started from seed in May. So I didn't get much of a harvest and even then it was a late one. Out of pure curiosity I took a chili pepper tree that had produce two chilis but were treatened by frost indoor. As the weeks passed the pepper tree kept growing and flowering. Winter came and just a few feet from the snow outside it continued to give me peppers. It must have given me at least 250. I know it seems unbelievable but it's true. What was just an experiment turned into a great pleasure and fun. And as i was tending my tree, I started reading on the subject of vegetable production and started planning for a garden the next year. In my second year of growing my own food and after reading more and more I found something called self suficiency. And a lot of people that are actually growing all of their food themselves, sometimes in the middle of huge cities. And here I am now.....more and more on my way to my own self sufficiency. Hope you come along for the ride =).......next I'm gonna let you in on my plan.....for backyard domination!

P.S.: My pepper tree was returned to the earth two weeks ago. but his seedlings still bloom in my garden and he will enrich the dirt of his future generation with his compost.
